Practice

As with anything, the best way to get good is to practice. But how do you practice Stoicism? First, you need to be aware that what you experience may or may not serve you, and that your natural inclination (fight or flight) in any given circumstance may lead you down a path you don’t want to go.

But that doesn’t mean you have to completely reject what you feel. In fact, I hope I’ve shown you that you shouldn’t do that at all. Instead, I would suggest that you experience your feelings fully. That’s right. Give yourself permission to feel whatever you feel in the moment completely. You don’t need to act on it just because you feel it. But you’ll never know how to harness your emotion if you don’t allow yourself to experience it.

As you’re thinking about what you feel (which leads to a healthy integration of logic and emotion), consider what lesson you need to learn. Consider why you’re feeling the way you are. Most importantly, contemplate what you ought to do about it.

Then, and only then, should you act on it. The more you practice this framework—awareness, experience, thinking, acting—the better you’ll get at harnessing your emotions for power, not destruction.
